Description:

- Cylinders: 15x22 inches
General Notes:
- "Smallest Engine Owned By Union Pacific Placed In Service In Cheyenne Yards.
- "Will be Used to Switch Cars in the Shops -- Has No Tender and Weighs but Twenty-Five Tons -- Brought from Coalville, Utah, for This Purpose.
- "The smallest engine owned by the Union Pacific Railway company is now in the yards at Cheyenne, having been brought from Coalville, Utah, for the purpose of switching in the shops at this place. It is numbered 1388 and has been placed in charge of Engineer Tom Reid.
- "The tiny locomotive has been In use at Coalville for the handling of small coal cars at the mines at that place. It will weigh about twenty-five tons, or approximately one-third of the big "battle ships" employed on the main line of the Union Pacific. In place of a tender small bunkers are arranged just back of the cab, so that the entire weight of the locomotive rests on the driving wheels, and hence its drawing capacity is great considering its size.
- "The engine is not used about the yards but only in the shops handling the cars, tenders of engines, etc., which have to be moved in and out of the various shops. Heretofore, this work has either been done by hand or else it necessitated the use of a yard engine." (The Cheyenne Leader, July 25, 1901; courtesy Hol Wagner via email dated August 14, 2014)

Description (as Vauclain compound):
- Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
- Cylinders: 15-1/2&26x30 inches
Description (as simple):
- Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
- Cylinders: 21x30 inches
General Notes:
- In about 1914-1915, the 1640 series locomotives began having Schmidt superheaters installed; by 1937 UP 414 and 419 remained as saturated (non-superheated) locomotives; superheaters added 2,000 pounds to the locomotive weight.
- At some unknown date, UP 443 was rebuilt from 21x30 inches cylinders (simple), to 23x30 inches cylinders; larger cylinders increased UP 443's maximum tractive effort from 39,458 pounds to 41,412 pounds.
- UP 1640-1679 were built as Vauclain compound in 1900; rebuilt to simple on the date shown:

When the fairgrounds were converted into a university coliseum, #440 was saved by the Cornhusker Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Unable to find a home for the venerable 2-8-0 in the Lincoln area, the chapter offered #440 as a donation to Mid-Continent. She was moved on her own wheels from Nebraska via Sioux City, Iowa and Mankato, Minnesota and arrived at North Freedom in June of 1975."

Description (as Vauclain compound):
- Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
- Cylinders: 15-1/2&26x30 inches
Description (as simple):
- Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
- Cylinders: 21x30 inches
General Notes:
- In about 1914-1915, the 1680 series locomotives began having Schmidt superheaters installed; by 1931 all had received superheaters, which added 2,000 pounds to the locomotive weight.
- UP 1698 and 1699 were rebuilt within a year of their delivery to serve as test locomotives for a larger firebox design; the new design matched the design used on the UP's later 1901-1920 series of 2-8-0 locomotives built in 1903; the larger fireboxes resulted in an increase of 7,800 pounds of locomotive weight.
- UP 1680-1699 were built as Vauclain compound; rebuilt to simple on the date shown:
