Overview
Until the 1950s, Union Pacific used a group of Roadway machines specifically to drive pilings for the construction of its bridges and buildings. These machines were built specifically as Pile Drivers by the same companies that manufactured wreck derricks and locomotive cranes. On UP, these were built by Industrial Works of Bay City, Michigan, and its successor after 1931, Industrial Brownhoist.
UP entered the modern era with 11 pile drivers. All were retired between 1971 and 1982. UP 903111 was retired in 1971; 900322 and 910011 were retired in 1972; 900319, 900320 were retired in 1973; 902081, 902082 were retired in 1974; 903110 and 903112 were retired in 1975; and the last two, 903113 and 903114 were retired in 1982.
Although they had offered smaller versions of pile driving attachments for their cranes, in the 1950s, locomotive crane manufacturers had increased the capacity of their machines, which allowed larger and more stable pile driving attachments. These new and larger machines allowed the newer locomotive cranes to serve their multi-function purposes of being both self-propelled locomotive cranes, and self-propelled pile drivers.
Union Pacific records indicate that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, UP began buying new locomotive cranes with pile driving attachments, and these machines are described as being Pile Drivers, although they look almost entirely like a normal locomotive crane, with an unusual boom. These include UP 903075 and 903077, both built in December 1972.
