(Read the latest news from the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America)
On April 28, 2022 Union Pacific and Railroading Heritage of Midwest America made a joint announcement that several pieces of equipment would be donated to RRHMA, and moved to the RRHMA site in Silvis, Illinois, in late summer 2022.
Included in the announcement are the following:
- (click on each car's entry for a full history of each car)
- Coach "Katy Flyer", built in 1954 as UP 5468
- Coach "Portland Rose", built in 1954 as UP 5473
- Coach "Sunshine Special", built in 1954 as UP 5480
- Coach "City of Salina", built in 1954 as UP 5482
- Diner Lounge 5016, built in 1959 as UP Cafe Lounge 5016
- Business Car "Selma", built by Pullman in 1912 as UP Business Car 101
- Business Car "Stanford", built by Pullman in 1926 as SP #140 "Sunset"
- CA-10 Caboose 903011, built in 1975 as UP 25740 (one of 50 CA-10 cabooses, UP's last cupola cabooses)
- Baggage 904271, built in 1962 as UP 5746
Also included in the donation were the following:
The four coaches (City of Salina, Katy Flyer, Portland Rose, Sunshine Special) and Business Car "Stanford" were moved from storage at Oakland, California, on August 10, 2022, to Council Bluffs; moved from Council Bluffs to Silvis on August 25, 2022, in a special move by the Iowa Interstate Railroad, arriving at Silvis that evening.
UP 2-10-2 5511 and UP 4-6-6-4 3985 were moved from their storage in the Cheyenne roundhouse on September 14, 2022, to the steam shop for preparation for the move to to Silvis. Numerous photos were taken of a line-up of the Heritage steam fleet, including UP 4-8-8-4 4014 and 4-8-4 844, outside of the west side of the steam shop.
The move of UP 3985 and 5511 took place beginning on November 11, 2022, and was completed on November 19, 2022. The special move included UP 6936, C&NW 401, UP 966B, UP Caboose 25740, Business Car "Selma," Diner Lounge 5016 and Baggage 5746.
The equipment was moved as part of what was called a "Donation Special" that departed Cheyenne on November 11, 2022, and arrived at Silvis, Illinois, on November 19, 2022. The move took longer due to the age of UP 5511 and its type of wheel bearings.
The move from Cheyenne to Silvis was by way of Union Pacific across Nebraska to Council Bluffs, then by way of Iowa Interstate across Iowa from Council Bluffs to Silvis, Illinois, which is across the river from Iowa. Silvis is a suburb of the Quad Cities area (Rock Island and Moline in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa).
