(Return To LA&SL History Page)

Incorporated in March 1901; completed Los Angeles to Salt Lake City in May 1905; name changed to Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad in March 1916.

Unless noted, all SPLA&SL locomotives were oil-burning.

In April 1905, SPLA&SL and AT&SF made an agreement for San Pedro trains to operate over Santa Fe tracks over Cajon Pass. To avoid conflict and confusion for AT&SF dispatchers concerning similar-numbered Santa Fe and San Pedro locomotives, between mid 1905 and late 1906 the San Pedro renumbered its 100-, 200-, 400-, 500- and 600-series locomotives to become the 3100-, 3200-, 3400-, 3500- and 3600-series.

Description:

  • Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches (rebuilt from 54 inches in 1897, except as noted)
  • Cylinders: 18x24 inches

General Notes:

  1. SPLA&SL 52-60 were purchased from Oregon Short Line Railroad in July 1903 as part of the settlement that included the purchase of the Salt Lake City-Milford-Caliente branch of the OSL
  2. Some sources show that these seven locomotives never operated south of Lund, Utah; a review of operating union agreements suggests that they likely were not allowed south of Caliente, Nevada

Notes:

  1. SPLA&SL 52 was built as UPRy 49 in 1882; to OSLRy 12 in 1882; to OSLRy 967 in 1885; to OSL&UN 967 in 1889; to OSL 507 in 1897; to Utah & Pacific number 1 in September 1898; U&P sold to OSL in April 1901; to OSL 507 (OSL 1007?) in 1901; to SPLA&SL 52 in 1903; vacated before 1914 (U&P information from Salt Lake Daily Tribune, September 29, 1898)
  2. A potential conflict comes from a report in the July 21, 1903 issue of The Salt Lake Tribune, in its report of the 17 locomotives being sold by OSL to SPLA&SL. The report specifically says OSL No. 1007, a diamond stack locomotive, was being "rejuvenated" and would emerge as SPLA&SL No. 52. Available roster information does not show an OSL No. 1007, and shows that SPLA&SL No. 52 came from OSL 507, the former Utah & Pacific No. 1. Maybe U&P No. 1 became OSL 1007 upon its return to OSL in 1901.
  3. SPLA&SL 53 was built as UPRR 133 (2nd) in 1874; to UPRy 133 in 1880; to OSLRy 21 in 1883; to OSLRy 974 in 1885; to OSL&UN 974 in 1889; to OSL 512 in 1897; to Utah & Pacific number 3 in December 1898; U&P sold to OSL in April 1901; to OSL 512 in 1901; to SPLA&SL 53 in 1903; to LA&SL 53 in 1916; scrapped in November 1918 (U&P information from OSL account books, per Pitchard research)
  4. SPLA&SL 54 was built as Utah Southern RR 7 in 1881; to UCRy 13 in 1881; to OSL&UN 1028 in 1889; rebuilt to OSL 514 in 1897; to SPLA&SL 54 in 1903; vacated in 1914
  5. SPLA&SL 55 was built as UPRy 65 in 1882; to Utah Central Railway 22 in 1883; to OSL&UN 1031 in 1889; to OSL 517 in 1897; 517 to SPLA&SL 55 in 1903; vacated before 1914
  6. SPLA&SL 56 was built as UPRy 51 in 1882; to OSLRy 8 in 1882; to OSLRy 965 in 1885; to OSL&UN 965 in 1889; to OSL 518 in 1897; to SPLA&SL 56 in 1903; sold to Bakersfield & Ventura Railway number 1 (Oxnard, California) on June 9, 1905; scrapped in 1906
  7. SPLA&SL 57 was built as OSLRy 34 in 1883; to OSLRy 982 in 1885; to OSL&UN 982 in 1889; to OSL 522 in 1897; to SPLA&SL 57 in 1903; to LA&SL 57 in 1916; assigned LA&SL 1590, but not renumbered; vacated 1922.
  8. SPLA&SL 58 was built as as UPRR 107 in 1868; to UPRy 107 in 1880; to UPRy 907 in 1885; transferred to OSL&UN ownership as OSL&UN 907 before 1894; rebuilt in February 1894 with 57 inch drivers; to OSL 523 in 1897; to SPLA&SL 58 in 1903; wrecked in April 1906 and scrapped.
