Overview
Until the traffic downturn in 1980, the number of locomotives stored by Union Pacific tended to be within the normal range of older and low-priority units set aside to reduce operating costs, and to prepare them for retirement. The total changed regularly but was usually between 100 and 150 locomotives out of service and awaiting retirement.
The severe downturn in traffic levels on UP began in late 1980. At that time there were, more or less, the usual number of locomotives stored unserviceable pending retirement and disposition. This number included the fleet of DDA40X Centennials.
The total numbers began climbing in January 1981, with over 270 locomotive stored. By May 1981, the total had increased to 481; then 555 by September. In May 1982, the number had increased to 625, and to 748 by July.
By 1983, the total number of locomotive in storage began fluctuating as business began to return, but was still more than 500 in July and September. Beginning in October 1983, the six-axle EMDs and GEs were returned to service.
Between December 1983 and December 1984, the number of locomotives stored went from 821 (with 15,000 freight cars in storage), to 139 units stored. This latter number reflected a more typical number for locomotives stored unserviceable, including all Priority III units that were out of service pending immediate retirement.
