(No attempt has been made to determine a start-of-year total of the locomotive fleet for the years from 1915 to 1926 due to incomplete records of retirements, and incomplete records of the 1915 renumbering.)
1915
On March 1, 1915, Union Pacific put into effect a "Systemwide Numbering Plan" that would essentially renumber almost every locomotive, freight car, passenger car, and caboose owned by the railroad and its several subsidiaries.
The locomotives shown below may or may not have actually been renumbered from their previous numbers, shown in parentheses (xxxx), to their newly assigned-in-1915 numbers. Records are incomplete.
Many of the 4-6-0s shown were in their pre-1915 numbers. Of the 96 locomotives in the 900- and 1000-series, only 17 remained in service after 1915 to receive their new 1200-series numbers. Records are incomplete.
