Measurements

On July 18, 2003, with the help of Warren Johnson, we measured Utah Railway SD50S 6061 at the railroad's Midvale, Utah engine facility.

It turns out that what we know as the Australian SD50S is 10 inches shorter than the US SD40-2, and 3 feet shorter than the US SD50. The difference appears to be mostly in the truck center measurement.

Below are the numbers, comparing the unit to a UP SD40-2, and with information from the Diesel Spotters Guide, 2000 edition:

Jacking pads are 16 inches closer together than bolster centers, which are 8 inches outboard at each end from the jacking pads.

Other Measurements:

Rear cab wall to separation line between generator/dynamic brake compartment and the engine compartment: 14' 10" (178").

The engine room doors are 77 inches tall.

The doors below the radiators are 50 inches tall.

The smaller of the radiator screens is 25-1/2 inches high and 95 inches long, mounted 70-1/2 inches above the walkway.

The larger of the radiator screens is 32 inches tall and 95 inches long, mounted 63-1/2 inches above the walkway.
