16 GM TD-4007 224-239 40 1945

Notes:

  1. Buses delivered prior to February, 1945 on some PCL properties were numbered according to the system previously in use there; thus the first 15 gas GM's might have been 600's. Similar buses on California properties were in the 900's, so that possibility also exists. The former UL&T buses were not renumbered.

Buses renumbered in February 1945 or acquired prior to March 1948:

General Notes:

  1. These number groups were part of a PCL scheme whereby the first digit represented the system; in this case, "3" denoted Salt Lake City Lines. The second digit represented the capacity of the bus, i.e. 0 = 40, 5 = 45, and 6 = 36. SLCL buses above did not get NCL numbers after 1953 if they stayed in Salt Lake City. If they were transferred to other NCL properties, as some were, they were put into the sequential NCL system at that time.

Metro Transportation, Inc. (Ogden), 1954-1974

July 28, 1954
John Yeaman and Gene Boswell purchased Moss Transportation Co. from George Moss, along with the rights to operate commuter buses between Garland in Box Elder County, and Hill Field in Weber County. Moss had started his bus company in 1952. Boswell and Yeaman changed the name to Metro Transportation, Inc. They were already operating Ogden Bus Lines, and Wasatch Motors, which was operating commuter buses for workers in defense sites in Weber and Davis counties. (Motor Coach Age, Volume 29, Number 3, March 1987)

June 1959
Metro Transportation, Inc., added a new commuter bus service between southern Weber County, and the Thiokol plant in Box Elder County. The company received regulatory approval from the Utah Public Service Commission on June 12, 1959. (Ogden Standard Examiner, June 16, 1959)

April 30, 1971
John H. Yeaman, owner of Ogden Bus Lines, applied to the Utah Public Service Commission to reduce bus service in Ogden. The application included costs of all three bus companies (Ogden Bus Lines, Metro Transportation, and Wasatch Motors), showing that it cost the bus company 43 cents per passenger route mile to operate its service, the company revenue was just 32 cents per passenger route mile. The costs to operate the Ogden Bus Lines were about $125 more than revenue. (Ogden Standard Examiner, April 30, 1971)

September 17, 1971
John H. Yeaman offered to sell his four bus companies providing bus service Weber and Davis counties (Ogden Bus Lines, Metro Transportation, Wasatch Motors, and Lake Shore Motor Coach Lines), for $589,754, his projected revenue for 1971. The offer was in response to the recent recommendations of the Transportation Coordinating Commitee of the Wasatch Front (known as TransCom), the Utah government agency that was overseeing the implementation of the $1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration for an urbanized bus system in Salt Lake, Utah, Davis and Weber counties. The grant was a provision of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1970 for urban bus systems for cities larger than 50,000 people. TransCom had made recommendations for bus service in Ogden that did not include the routes served by Yeaman's four companies. (Ogden Standard Examiner, September 17, 1971)

(John H. Yeaman, age 46, died after a short illness on January 16, 1972 - Ogden Standard Examiner, January 17, 1972)

June 24, 1976
Utah Transit Authority took over the routes of Ogden Bus Lines, Metro Transportation, and Wasatch Motors.

September 28, 1973 -- Utah Transit Authority signed a purchase agreement to purchase for $195,000, the four bus companies of John H. Yeaman (Ogden Bus Lines, Metro Transportation, Wasatch Motors, and Lake Shore Motor Coach Lines), excepting each company's charter bus business.

June 30, 1974 -- The sale was approved by the Second District Court.

May 6, 1975 -- The Utah Public Service Commission approved the sale of the stock of Lake Shore Motor Coach Lines to Cook Transportation and Utah Valley Transit.

March 8, 1976 -- The Utah Supreme Court affirmed the PSC approval of the sale of Lake Shore Motor Coach Lines to Cook Transportation. The suit had been brought by Continental Trailways Bus System and Greyhound Bus Lines, contesting the sale of Lake Shore Motor Coach Lines to Cook Transportation Co.

June 4, 1976 -- The Utah PSC cancelled the rights of the four bus companies to operate their bus routes, which in turn transferred those rights to UTA.

Notes:

  1. The erratic numbering appears to have been due to some kind of assigned permit numbers; see the photograph of Airway Motor Coach 34 printed with Part I of this history.
  2. This roster, not available when the earlier parts of the Salt Lake City history were printed, was found by Don Strack [in 1987 while doing research in Utah Public Service Commission files] and submitted by P. Allen Copeland.
