General Notes:

  1. D&RGW Class DE B-B 60.
  2. D&RGW 5401, 5404, 5411, 5414, 5421, 5424, 5431, 5434, 5441, 5444, 5451, 5454, 5461, 5464, 5471, 5474 (16 units) were fitted with couplers between the FTA units and their corresponding FTB unit, instead of the standard drawbar. EMD designated this coupler-equipped version as FS, rather than FT.
  3. Delivered as part of A-B-B-A sets, with total 5,400 horsepower, numbered D&RGW 540-551; renumbered in January to April 1950, with A-units receiving 1 and 4 as fourth digits, and B-units receiving 2 and 3 as fourth digits.
  4. D&RGW 5481 and its A-B-B-A set were the first units to receive the new "Prospector" scheme of Aspen Gold, aluminum color and four black stripes. This was at some time during 1950, and before the December 1950 wreck that destroyed 5481. It was sent to EMD to be rebuilt and returned in March 1951, retaining the new paint scheme. (F7As 5701-5764 and F7Bs 5702-5753 were the first new units in the new scheme, delivered 15 months later, in June 1952.)
  5. D&RGW 5401-5474 (16 units) had 244,000 pounds operating weight
  6. D&RGW 5481 and 5484 (two units) had 249,000 pounds operating weight

  3. D&RGW 5414, 5431, 5471, 5474, 5491, 5494 (6 units) were retired in February and March 1962, and were traded to EMD on GP30s 3001-3013, delivered in April and May 1962.
  4. D&RGW 5444, 5451, 5461, 5501, 5504, 5511, 5514 (7 units) were retired in December 1962 and were traded to EMD on GP30s 3015-3028, delivered in February 1963.

General Notes:

  1. D&RGW Class DE B-B 60.
  2. D&RGW 5402, 5403, 5412, 5413, 5422, 5423, 5432, 5433, 5442, 5443, 5452, 5453, 5462, 5463, 5472, 5473 (16 units) were fitted with couplers between the FTB units and its corresponding FTA unit, rather than the standard drawbar, a combination that EMD designated as FS, rather than FT.

Photo research reveals that just these eight units actually had steam generators.) (see also: Roster Notes - Steam Generators)
  5. Steam generators removed from six FT cabless booster units 5492, 5493, 5502, 5503, 5512 and 5513 in mid 1953, and the units converted to freight service; of the six removed steam generators, two were installed in F7 cabless booster units 5582 and 5583, and two each were installed in steam generators cars 250 and 251 in May and June 1953.

General Notes:

  1. D&RGW Class DE B-B 59.
  2. Part of a 619-unit group of transition units that have been called F5s; these are late F3s built from August 1948 to February 1949 by EMD, and many were equipped with D27B traction motors and Type B power transition control, as later used on F7s. External body features matched both late F3s and early F7s. (See Extra 2200 South, issue 96, July-August-September 1992, page 19) (Read more about D&RGW's F3, F5, and F7 locomotives)
  3. Delivered as part of A-B-B-A sets, numbered D&RGW 555-557; renumbered in January to April 1950, with A-units receiving 1 and 4 as fourth digits, and B-units receiving 2 and 3 as fourth digits.
  4. All six cab units were fitted with built-up horizontal side grilles.
  5. D&RGW 5571 and 5574 were fitted with steam generators; replaced by water tanks after wreck repairs in 1954 (5571) and 1952 (5574); water tanks allowed these A-units to furnish water for the steam generators in adjacent B-units. (see also: Roster Notes - Steam Generators)
  6. Previous D&RGW rosters have shown that D&RGW 5561 was wrecked on 19 December 1963 at Mill Fork, Utah, then repaired and returned to service. Three photos of the wreck scene recently uncovered by Steve Seguine of Orem, Utah, shows that two ABBA sets of units were involved, with 5661 and 5701 being the wrecked units after colliding head-on. D&RGW 5561 was not involved.
  7. D&RGW 5571 (along with F3A 5531) was wrecked on 20 November 1953 at Dos, Colorado; the unit received a complete F9A carbody as a result of wreck repairs by EMD in February 1954 under EMD order number 8032; both units were completed with the new gold, silver, and four-black-stripe paint scheme, although 5571 had already been repainted to the new scheme following wreck repairs to 5574 in 1953; later, D&RGW 5571 was one of the last F units in service with the four-stripe paint scheme, repainted to the single stripe scheme in October 1968.
  8. Built under EMD order number E-956 (shared with F7Bs 5552-5573).
