UP-C&NW 1953 Motive Power Changes

[Union Pacific internal letter]

January 29, 1953

It has been decided that C&NW power units assigned to Trains 101-102 will not be operated west of Omaha and Union Pacific power assigned to Trains 101-102, 103-104 and 105-106 will not be operated east of Omaha.

(This would return C&NW power to C&NW rails east of Omaha, and return UP power to UP rails west of Omaha.)

(The change was to take place progressively from February 4th through February 7th, allowing all C&NW locomotives to be moved eastward to Omaha, and all UP locomotives to be moved westward to Omaha.)

This arrangement will be progressively affected as follows:

  February 4, 1953 February 5, 1953 February 6, 1953 February 7, 1953
Arrive Leave Arrive Leave Arrive Leave Arrive Leave
Train Omaha Omaha Omaha Omaha Omaha Omaha Omaha Omaha
No. C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP C&NW UP
101 2 1   3 2     3
102 2 1 2   2 1 2     3 2
103   3   3 2     3
104   3 2     3 2
105   3   3   3   3   3   3 2     3
106   3   3   3   3   3 2

Power assignment for Trains 111-112 will not be changed and UP and C&NW units on these trains will continue to run through between Denver and Chicago.

To avoid excessive layover at Oamha, a pool of 10 sets of diesel power should be provided to handle Trains 101-102, 5-6 and 23-24 between Omaha and Ogden and 105-106 between Omaha and Portland as follows:

Omaha-Ogden, Train 101; Ogden-Omaha, Train 6
Omaha-Portland, Train 105; Portland-Omaha, Train 106
Omaha-Ogden, Train 23; Ogden-Omaha, Train 102
Omaha-Ogden, Train 5; Ogden-Omaha, Train 24

Train 24's units will be returned on Train 101 and power turned for other trains as above outlined.
