General Notes:

  1. Total of 52 MP units went to UP at merger, numbered MP 2238-2289.
  2. Built as CRI&P (Rock Island) 4300-4351; to MoPac on 15 April 1980 and 1 May 1980 after Rock Island's bankruptcy and shutdown; MP 2250-2288 and 2289-2334 number groups were used earlier for MoPac U23Bs 4500-4537 and MoPac B23-7s 4600-4645; both groups of GE units were renumbered to the MP 4500 and 4600 series groups in 1980 to avoid conflict with these former Rock Island GP38-2s and new GP38-2s.
  3. All 52 units were originally owned by and leased to Rock Island by Equilease (26 units) and JPMorgan Interfunding (26 units); later owned by Citicorp (52 units), then by both Citicorp (26 units) and GATX (26 units); leased to Missouri Pacific in 1980; leased to Union Pacific after UP's control of MP in 1982; lease renewed by UP several times; on 29 December 2004, the units owned by Citicorp were sold to GATX (eventually giving them ownership of all 52 units) and GATX continued the lease to UP; current lease expired in October 2007. (Date of sale for the CitiGroup units to GATX from Randy Keller via email dated January 4, 2005)
  4. UP 2284 (ex MP 2284) was the first in this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 5 March 1986; UP 2242 (ex MP 2242) was the last, completed on 30 September 1993.
  5. Not equipped with dynamic braking.
  6. Assigned UP 2238-2289 in December 1985, all units renumbered; assigned UP 738-789 in December 1999.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 45 MP units went to UP at merger, numbered MP 2290-2334.
  2. Of the original 45 units, nine units (MP 2298, 2306, 2307, 2308, 2312, 2313, 2320, 2328, 2330) were repainted to UP yellow and gray, with Missouri Pacific lettering, in October 1984 through September 1985; relettered to UP in August 1990 through August 1993.
  3. UP 2294 (ex MP 2294) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 24 April 1986; UP 2310 (ex MP 2310) was the last, completed on 16 November 1993; UP 2310 was also the last former Missouri Pacific-owned locomotive to be repainted to Union Pacific's yellow and gray paint scheme; at the time, there were still five leased units (MP 2075, 2089, 2092, 2103, and 2106) in service in MoPac blue; UP 2103 was the final MP-painted unit to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 2 August 1994.
  4. The MP 2290-2334 number group was used earlier for MP B23-7s 4600-4645, which were renumbered to the MP 4600 series in 1980 to avoid conflict with the former Rock Island GP38-2s.
  5. Not equipped with dynamic braking.
  6. Assigned UP 2290-2234 in December 1985, all units renumbered; assigned UP 790-834 in December 1999.

General Notes:

  1. Built as MP 858-902, renumbered to MP 2009-2053 in 1974.
  2. All 45 MP units leased to UP in January 1984 to help with UP's shortage of low horsepower four-axle units; only seven units were repainted/renumbered to UP; all units were retired from the active roster in July 1987.
  3. All units, except MP 2031, were retired by UP on 3 July 1987 upon expiration of the 15 year lease on 30 June 1987, and returned to their owner/lessor. The owner/lessor sold the remaining 44 units to a joint venture between Helm Financial and Grand Trunk Corp. Ownership of the 44 units was split between Helm (20 units) and GT (24 units), with those 24 units eventually becoming GT 5700 class units (renumbered to GT 4900 class in January to March 1997). Some of GT's 24 units were leased to other railroads while awaiting their turn through GT's Battle Creek, Mich., rebuild program. The 20 units owned by Helm were part of Helm's national lease fleet until early February 1989, when Helm leased the 20 units to UP on a long term lease. As units in the 20-unit group leased to UP came due for shop work during 1989 and 1990, they were repainted from MP blue to UP yellow and gray, and renumbered to UP's 1800 series.
  4. Not equipped with dynamic braking.

General Notes:

  1. Total of nine MKT units went to UP at merger, numbered MKT 380-388.
  2. Built as Kennecott Copper Corp. (KCC) 779-class units; to MKT in late 1984.
  3. (Read more about the former Kennecott units in service in Utah)
  4. All units originally built with high-visibility cabs (26 inches higher than normal EMD cabs) for service in Kennecott's Bingham Canyon copper mine near Salt Lake City; the units were modified with lower cabs by National Railway Equipment, in one of that company's first projects, at a leased facility in Clearfield, Utah, in August through October 1984, and immediately entered service on MKT.
  5. On all except UP 2353, the entire cab was lowered by removing the 26 inches of extra height, but because the actual cab roof was then too low, a four-inch hump was added to allow clearance to open the cab interior electrical cabinet doors. The extra-height cab on UP 2353, ex MKT 383, originally KCC 782, was in very poor shape from wreck damage repair by Kennecott (the cab had been sheared off by a mining shovel in the Bingham Canyon Mine). National Railway Equipment replaced the entire cab with one from a retired Milwaukee Road SD45.
  6. UP 2357 (ex MKT 387) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 13 December 1988; UP 2353 (ex MKT 383) was the last, completed on 25 January 1991.
  7. Assigned UP 2350-2358 in December 1988, all units renumbered; assigned UP 1200-1208 (not in sequence) in December 1999.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 20 MKT units went to UP at merger, numbered MKT 360-379.
  2. All units were built after normal GP39-2 production had ceased and have larger radiator intake screens, along with other features of EMD's GP49 carbody.
  3. UP 2362, 2369, 2374, 2375, and 2377 are the second UP units to carry these numbers; the first were former MP GP38-2s 2036, 2043, 2048, 2049, and 2051, which were given their UP numbers in 1986 and were retired by UP in 1987. (As a side note, the former MP units (except the first UP 2369) returned to UP in 1989 under lease from Helm Financial as UP 1815, 1817, 1818, and 1819; UP 2369 (1st, ex MP 2043) became GT 5709 in 1988.)
  4. UP 2372 (ex MKT 373) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 18 August 1989; UP 2376 (ex MKT 377) was the last, completed on 15 October 1991.
  5. UP 2359-2366 (eight units) were purchased by UP on 15 June 1999 upon expiration of the original lease to MKT; UP 2367-2378 (12 units) retired in July 2000 and returned to owner.
  6. Assigned UP 2359-2378 in December 1988, all units renumbered; assigned UP 1209-1228 in December 1999; UP 2367-2378 (12 units) retired prior to being renumbered to UP 1217-1228.

Notes:

  1. UP 2367-2378 (12 units) were returned to their owner/lessor upon expiration of their lease to UP; stored on UP property pending new lease; all 12 units were renumbered as temporary WP units in late 2000 and April and May 2001 to clear their UP 2360 series numbers for use on renumbered SD60Ms; stored at Grand Island, Nebraska, in early June 2002. General Notes:

  1. Total of nine units to UP under a long term operating lease in November 1997 from Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX), numbered UP 2390-2398; reconditioned and repainted by VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky; renumbered to UP 890-898 beginning in June 2001.
  2. Built as Cleveland Electric Illuminating (CEIX) 100-108, with the same specifications as Penn Central's GP38-2s; returned to owner/lessor, EMD.
  3. Originally assigned numbers 1971-1979, until it was discovered that UP already had units assigned to these numbers (UP 1971-1998, ex SP 4845-4875); former CEIX units 100, 101, and 104 were completed by VMV and shipped to UP with their assigned 1971 series numbers, UP 1971, 1972, and 1975, during the second week of November 1997; the mistake was discovered, and the new 2390-2398 number series was assigned to the units; the three units with incorrect road numbers were returned to VMV and given their new numbers, 2390, 2391 and 2394, on the dates shown above; while CEIX 100 was briefly numbered UP 1971, it duplicated a road number held by the other UP 1971 unit, renumbered from SP 4845 on 28 April 1997.
  4. Assigned UP 2390-2398 in November 1997, all units renumbered; assigned UP 890-898 in December 1999; five units renumbered prior to being retired 2008-2009.
  5. Starting in November 2008, because all nine units are owned by GATX (which bought EMD's interest in LLPX), and UP has decided that all of its short-term leased units should be in the numbers and ownership of the lease owner, GATX began reconditioning and renumbering to their respective GMTX road numbers, GMTX 2162-2170.
