General Notes:

  1. Built as UP 1229; renumbered to UP 2035 in June 1915; renumbered to UP 1400 in October 1951; retired in June 1958.
  2. UP 1229 was UP's first Harriman-style steel car. It was built by UP itself to Plan CB-4947, dated February 24, 1906, which was the basis for two experimental full postal cars. SP's Sacramento General Shops began construction of CP 4097 on June 11, 1906. Union Pacific's Omaha shops started work on UP 1229 at about the same time. These cars were similar to the first steel coach (SP 1806), but there were differences. The underframe had the same two 12", 31.5-pound I-beam center sills, cast double body bolsters, and truss rods. However, the floors were not wood. Instead, Monolith was applied over the corrugated steel sub-floor. The arch of the roof was slightly higher, resulting in height over roof sheets of 13' 10 9/16" instead of the 13' 8 3/16" on SP 1806. All subsequent Common Standard cars had 14-foot roof heights. (Jeff Cauthen)
  3. Changed from Postal to Postal Storage in November 1941 by removal of the mail fixtures (pigeon hole letter cases, stanchion racks, etc.).

On the back of Vanishing Vistas JT-361, a color photo of UP 2057 in two-tone gray paint, the following text was presented:

The RPO cars were built to Post Office Department specifications, but they were staffed by clerks employed by the railroad rather than the Post Office Department. A common carbody was 65 feet long of conventional heavyweight construction, riding on two 6-wheel trucks, with window and door arrangement as shown here. Sacked mail was picked up and dropped through the door at the right. Mail sorting tables, sack-racks and distribution boxes filled the interior, which closely resembled a small post office. As late as 1950, before massive diversion of mail from railroads had commenced, the UP owned 86 such cars devoted entirely to postal activity, and 81 others which accommodated some baggage space also.

Not all mail cars were utilized for RPO functions. Many of them were loaded with mail at major collection/distribution points, and were picked up or cut out of the trains at other such locations. These were called mail storage cars, and their purpose was the movement of bulk first-class mail among the principal "junctions" in the Post Office network. Most storage cars were of standard baggage car configuration, but sometimes RPO cars were modified for this service by removing their interior mail sorting equipment. Car Number 2057 is an example of such a car. During the 1950s, this kind of mail was diverted to aircraft and trucks, while the in-transit sorting was discontinued in favor of pre-shipment sorting in ordinary post offices. (Robert A. Le Massena, Vanishing Vistas JT-381, 1973)
