Notes:

  1. UP 3669 is preserved at Travel Town, Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California
  2. From Travel Town web site:
  3. "Dining Car no. 369 was one of fourteen identical cars built for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1921 by the Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company. The car has table seating for 36 people as well as a full kitchen, complete with wood-fired range, steam table, ice boxes, hot and cold running water, and even a charcoal broiler. Known to railroaders simply as a "36-seater", this car, and hundreds of others like it, represented the standard on American railroads from the 1880s until the late 1940s. With some later modernizations, a number of these cars remained in service through the 1960s."
  4. "The 369 entered service in July 1921, joining a pool of similar cars which ran in the fleet Union Pacific's first class passenger trains. Although its actual train assignments are not known to us, the list of possibilities includes such grand trains as the Los Angeles Limited and the Overland Limited. In the 1930s, diners of the "300" series were renumbered to "3600" series. Our no. 369 became 3669. In 1938, with the advent of new streamlined trains, no. 3669 was removed from regular service, refurbished and assigned to "Coffee Shop" duty on 2nd class trains. Many of her sister cars, which remained in "dining" service, were remodeled to modernize their looks. The 3669 was not remodeled, however, and still retains its original structural appearance."
  5. UP 389 was wrecked on the LA&SL in April 1927 and retired (UP 3689 number remained blank and not used)

  2. Floor Plan (as Lunch Counter Diner): 237-CB-31265
  3. Floor Plan (as Cafeteria Lounge): 237-CB-35525
  4. As built, UP 4000-4003 class "Lunch Counter" cars had a long lunch counter, with 21 seats at the counter (nearly the length of the car), and four tables at one end. Because of the long lunch counter, one side looked like a baggage car (with just two windows at the table end), and the other side looked like a coach.
  5. In 1960, UP 4001-4003 were reconfigured as "Cafeteria Lounge" cars. The lunch counter seats were removed, and the counter was reconfigured as a cafeteria serving area. The four dining tables were removed and replaced with 16 inward-facing lounge chairs along the walls.
  6. The 4000-series Lunch Counter Diner cars were delivered to UP in June 1955, and were moved, "dead-headed," to Los Angeles to be furnished for their first trip. The cars were assigned to the City of St. Louis, between Denver and Los Angeles to provide food service for coach passengers. The first car was part of the consist of Train No. 10, the eastbound City of St. Louis on July 9, 1955. (An initial unofficial first trip took place on July 5, 1955 as part of a substitute No. 10 due to a late running No. 9 that had missed its Los Angeles connection.)
  7. UP 4000 was reconfigured as a Cafeteria Lounge in August 1957, and assigned to the City of Las Vegas, possibly by the removal of just the 21 counter seats, with the four tables remaining intact. UP Mechanical Department records do not show this change. Timetable equipment notes for Trains 115-116 (City of Las Vegas) suggest that a Lunch Counter Diner car held that assignment, meaning that it was not yet configured as the later Cafeteria Lounge.
  8. The other three cars (UP 4001-4003) were reconfigured as Cafeteria Lounge cars in 1960, after being removed from City of St. Louis service between Los Angeles and Denver service at the end of summer 1959. After being reconfigured as Cafeteria Lounge, the three cars were also assigned to City of Las Vegas service until the train ended in August 1967. After the end of City of Las Vegas service, all four 4000-series cars were held for standby service and special assignments.

(2007 update from Roy Wullich, email dated May 19, 2007)
  3. UP 4002 to Cafeteria Lounge in 1960; to Alaska Railroad 4002, body on ground (office)

The hall side of both styles of cars were the same. The Buffet Lounge cars could be frequently found on the all-coach section of the "Domeliner Challenger" trains 103 and 104 often operating behind the dome coach to help provide lounge and buffet service and supplement a 5000 series cafe in the same train. Later, they were regularly assigned to the Portland Rose. (Hubert Hanrahan, via message posted to Trainorders.com, June 14, 2013)

The following information for UP 4054 comes from the Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum's web site:

UP 4054 was built by The Pullman Car & Mfg. Corp., Pullman, IL; December 1929

Originally painted in Pullman green, numbered UP #326, and placed in service as a 36-seat dining car, this car was built to Plan 7280, Lot 6251 (five cars), and floor plan 234-CB-21755. It had a kitchen with side service door, ice-cooled refrigerators, and rooftop ice hatches; a pantry; a dining room with six 4-seat and six 2-seat tables; and a small entry area at the steward's end. It originally weighed 173,800 lbs. (86.9 tons), with Vapor Company steam heat and six-wheel trucks. It's 82'-5" long over couplers, 9'-11 7/8" wide over eaves (originally 10'- 3/8"), and is 14' high. Pullman air-conditioning was added in 1932, and the car was renumbered UP #3626 in September 1940.

In May 1964, it was modernized at Union Pacific's Omaha, NE shops to floor plan #237-CB-37233, emerging as a streamlined-looking modern Armour yellow buffet/lounge car, with Harbormist gray underframe and roof, and red stripes and lettering. Renumbered UP #4054, it weighs 178,660 lbs.(89.33 tons). Tight-lock couplers, Hyatt roller bearings, Safety E.M. air-conditioning, roof skirting, new windows, and adjustable window blinds were added. The galley was rebuilt with stainless-steel equipment, and the pantry converted into a service counter. The dining room became a lounge, with five settees, twelve armchairs, six coffee tables, and writing desk with chair. The entry area at the steward's end remained. Most of the settees & lounge chairs were later removed, six 4-seat tables reinstalled, and the car designated a buffet/diner.

UP #4054 was assigned to the Kansas City-Denver-Portland secondary streamliner Portland Rose, running as a cafe/lounge to La Grande, OR, where it was removed from westbound #17 after dinner, restocked, and placed on eastbound #18 before breakfast. It was later cut back to a Denver-La Grande run as a buffet/lounge, and by 1970 was only running between Portland and Pocatello, ID serving cafeteria-style meals, due to schedule changes and light patronage. In 1971 AMTRAK took over and drastically cut rail passenger service in the USA, and UP #4054 was retired and stored in Los Angeles by the Union Pacific.

In May 1972, O. Charles Varnes purchased the car for planned excursion service with Overland Rail Travel. It did not work out as planned, and in December 1980 Varnes donated UP #4054 to the PSRMA. Briefly stored at San Diego's Miramar Naval Air Station, it was moved to the La Mesa Depot in September 1981 and placed on exhibit. On May 23, 1982 it was a snack car on the La Mesa Cannonball, the PSRMA-run first passenger train on the SD&AE's El Cajon branch in 54 years. It served as a crew diner on the museum's "Great Freight" to Campo in July/August 1983.

UP #4054 is on display at Campo, and is occasionally used on museum trains in cool weather only, as its air-conditioning does not operate well at the slow speeds of museum trains, and it has sealed windows. It will be restored to its 1964 appearance as time and funds permit.
