  • Length, Over End Sills: 73'-9"
  • Truck Centers: 58'-0"
  • Truck Style: 6 wheel (11'-0" wheelbase)

General Notes:

  1. Seating Capacity: 44 seats, later 48 seats as modernized
  2. Built as UP 400 series Coach in 1929; reclassified as Chair cars in 1936; remodeled and renumbered to 500 series by UP at Omaha in 1939.
  3. The 500-523 Chair Cars were "remodeled/rebuilt" for Challenger service in 1939, but they didn't get "streamlined" until 1948. The 1948 date comes from info Bob Darwin prepared for Coach Yard when they imported models of those cars. I believe that P-3-6 (1941) applies to only the "non-streamlined" cars, and P-3-14 (1949) applies to only the "streamlined" cars. (Bob Probst, email dated December 3, 2004)
  4. In 1939 UP rebuilt 24 cars from the group of coaches 442-481 to 44 seat Chair Cars. I do not believe that UP "Streamlined" them at that time. They were covered by UP's Diagram P-3-6. In 1948 UP once again rebuilt the cars and this time increased the seating to 48 seats. And they were now "modernized" in other words streamlined at this time. They are now under UP Diagram P-3-14. One car number 506 had been wrecked earlier and so there are only 23 cars remaining. (Larry Hochhalter, email dated March 9, 2005)
  5. UP 500-523 were modernized, including flush windows and streamlined roofs, in 1948 (Read more about UP's modernized heavyweight cars)
  6. UP specification 324
  7. Air conditioned by Pullman in 1935 (as 400-series Coach)
