UP 1365 was the first F-M H20-44 built, in May 1947. UP 1366 was the second, completed in June 1947. The two locomotives both carried the number F-M 2000. UP 1365 was used as F-M 2000 on a demonstration tour of the western states. The other F-M 2000 (UP 1366) was used on a demonstration tour of the eastern states. This tour of the eastern states by UP 1366 as F-M 2000 included display on June 23-28 at the 1947 annual "Railroad Fair" at Atlantic City, New Jersey, as part of the joint convention of the AAR Mechanical Division, and Purchasing and Stores divisions, and the Railway Supply Manufacturers Association. (The display included F-M "Erie-built" UP 984A and 985A, which had been completed in June and rushed to Atlantic City. They were delivered to UP in August.)

After their respective demonstration tours, UP 1365 and 1366 were delivered to UP in October 1947, a month before the four units in UP's second order of H20-44s, which were numbered as UP 1367-1370.

(Read more about these and other Fairbanks-Morse locomotives on Union Pacific)

General Notes:

  1. UP 1360-1370 were delivered with D.S. (Diesel Switch) prefix on road number; removed during March 1953.
  2. UP 1360, 1361, 1362, 1363, 1364 were equipped for multiple unit operation.
  3. In 1948, UP 1362, 1363, 1364, 1365, 1366 were equipped by Union Pacific with dynamic braking to reduce brake shoe wear and wheel failures on descending grades while in helper service on Cajon Pass and Cima Hill in California.
  4. UP 1360-1364 had F-M order number LD-39.
  5. UP 1365-1370 had F-M order number LD-43.
  6. (Correction: Builder Date for UP 1365 changed from June 1947 to May 1947, to match plate check by J. D. Ingles on March 26, 1962.)

Notes:

  1. UP 1361, 1362, and 1363 were seen being scrapped in Portland, Oregon during 1962.
  2. UP 1366 and 1369 are documented as being sold to Southwest Portland Cement and being renumbered to SWPC numbers 66 and 69. Both units were renumbered to SWPC 408 and 409, but there is some question concerning the sequence. The museums in Illinois and California both state that examination of their respective unit shows that it is the former UP 1366.
  3. To help put the question to rest, Ken Douglas was able to check the builder plates on both SWPC units, first on September 22, 1968, and again on February 2, 1970. The check in 1968 showed the following: SWPC 66, L1032, 6/47 and SWPC 69, L1042, 12/47. The check in 1970 showed: SWPC 409, L1032, 6/47 and SWPC 408, no plate data but noted "ex-66". This means that when SWPC renumbered the two units in 1969, the sequence was reversed, SWPC 66 became SWPC 409, and SWPC 69 became SWPC 408.
  4. As still more evidence, the headlight casings did not match published history, that ex UP 1366 went to California and ex UP 1369 went to Illinois. The headlight casing seen in photos of F- M 2000 at Atlantic City definitely matches the headlight casing (or lack of the more prominent version) on SWPX 409 (ex UP 1366) at Illinois.
  5. UP 1366 was sold to Southwestern Portland Cement Company number 66 at Victorville, California in 1963 (per Union Pacific records); renumbered to SWPC 409 in 1969; retired in 1984 and donated to Illinois Railway Museum.
  6. UP 1369 was sold to Southwestern Portland Cement Company number 69 at Victorville, California in 1963 (per Union Pacific records); renumbered to SWPC 408 in 1969; retired in 1984 and donated to Pacific Southwest Railway Museum on May 15, 1984; moved to Campo, California on February 28, 1987; repainted back to UP's original yellow and gray paint in 1998, numbered as UP 1366 (an incorrect number, but based on available information at the time).
