General Notes:

a. Original total of 34 SP/SSW units, numbered SP 7240-7247 and SSW 7248-7273; 32 units went to UP at merger; SP retired two units (SSW 7258 and 7267) prior to the merger.
b. Due to production schedule and delayed financial arrangements, these two groups of former SP and SSW suffered a mix up of frames while being built. The builder's serial numbers on the builder's plates do not match the units' frame numbers, as shown in the column above. (see Locomotive Notes II, Issue 179, page 1)
c. UP 5217 (ex SP 7247) was the first unit in this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 21 June 1997; UP 5236 (ex SSW 7268) was the last, completed on 11 May 1999.
d. Entire 32-unit group assigned UP 5210-5241 in September 1997, two units (above) renumbered; assigned UP 1310-1341 in December 1999, none renumbered prior to all 32 units being retired in April 2000.

General Notes:

a. Total of 65 units SP units went to UP at merger, 20 numbered for SSW and 45 numbered for SP.
b. Built as standard GP40s in the period May 1966 through December 1971 for the owners shown in the "First Number" column, below; all were remanufactured as GP40M-2s in November 1990 through June 1991 by Morrison Knudsen at its Boise, Idaho, and Mountaintop, Pa., locomotive shops.
c. All 65 units were completed with standard dynamic braking and PTC (Positive Traction Control) wheel-slip control system, along with SP-standard features such as roof-mounted beacon lights, air conditioning, ditch lights, snowplow, and improvements to the cab interiors.
d. A total of nine units (eight units former MKT units, and one former CRI&P unit) were built without dynamic braking and the feature was added as part of the MK remanufacturing.
e. UP 5371 (ex SP 7101) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 8 September 1997.
f. Entire 65-unit group assigned UP 5370-5434 in September 1997, one unit (UP 5371) renumbered; assigned UP 1470-1534 in December 1999.

General Notes:

a. Total of 30 MP units went to UP at merger, numbered MP 3500-3529.
b. First complete class of former MP locomotives to be repainted to Union Pacific yellow and gray, with Missouri Pacific lettering, completed in June 1984 through February 1985 (MP 3501 was the first, completed on 15 June 1984, and MP 3505 was the last, completed on 21 February 1985).
c. Of the 30 units to UP at merger, 12 units were renumbered to the UP 50-79 group in January through October 1988 (UP 57, ex MP 3507, was the first, completed on 7 January 1988, and UP 50, ex MP 3500, was the last, completed on 18 October 1988).
d. All 30 units were renumbered to the UP 960-989 group in January 1989 through May 1992 (UP 963, ex MP 3503, was the first, completed on 4 January 1989, and UP 981, ex UP 71, ex MP 3521, was the last, completed on 22 May 1992).
e. Of the 30 units to UP at merger, 29 units remained to be renumbered to the UP 5558-5587 series (UP 967 was retired in 1998); a total of 16 units were renumbered to the 5558-5587 series, including UP 5568, renumbered during August 2000, after the December 1999 assignment of the 1658-1687 series because the UP 1658 was still occupied by a GP15-1.
f. Built without dynamic braking; dynamic braking was added to UP 5558-5567 (10 units), as UP 960-969, by VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky, in October 1992 through August 1993.
g. Assigned UP 50-79 in December 1985, 12 units renumbered; assigned UP 960-989 in February 1989, all 30 units renumbered; assigned UP 5558-5587 in December 1996, 16 units renumbered; assigned UP 1658-1687 in December 1999.

1. UP 963 (assigned UP 5561) was converted to S6-1B road slug, completed as UPY 940 on 26 November 2003.
2. UP 967 (assigned UP 5565) was wrecked on 8 July 1998 at Redlands, California.
3. UP 5578 was wrecked on 10 February 2004 at Guyman, Okla.; still on property at time of planned arrival of new GE C44CCTE units, and was renumbered to temporary number WP 5578 on 24 June 2004 to avoid conflict (new GE number 5578 was delivered in August 2004).
