General Notes:

  1. UPP 140 "Stanford" was built in 1927 by Pullman and originally named the Sunset, car No. 140 was the second of three cars to carry the name. The car, carrying the Southern Pacific premier name, therefore, was the premier car in the fleet, and was assigned to the president. In 1955, the car was renamed in honor of Leland Stanford, first president of the Southern Pacific, and allowing the name Sunset to be given to car No. 150. The Stanford has undergone several mechanical upgrades, including new 6-wheel disc brake trucks and conversion to 480 volt head end power, thus allowing it to operate on Amtrak trains, the interior remains much as it was when built, with Honduras mahogany interior. The Stanford was the command car on site in the Tehachapis during the months-long rebuilding effort after the railroad was severed by the devastating earthquake in 1952. (from uprr.com)
  2. One of three business cars ordered in the 1920's from Pullman which were the peak of the car builders art at the time. The other two cars were SP 99 "Houston" and SP 100 "Airslie". (Espee.Railfan.net; SP Business Cars, by Bob Pecotich)
  3. Painted to UP yellow and gray at some point between February and July 1997, when it was seen in UP yellow and gray, with its new UPP 140 number. (information from Evan Werkema)
  4. On April 28, 2022, Union Pacific, in a joint press release with the non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America organization, announced the donation of UP 2-10-2 5511, together with 4-6-6-4 3985, and other equipment, including Business Car "Stanford".
  5. Business Car UPP 140 "Stanford" departed its normal storage location in Oakland, California, on August 10, 2022, along with four coaches (City of Salina, Katy Flyer, Portland Roase, Sunshine Special) with Council Bluffs, Iowa, as the destination. Business Car "Stanford" (UPP 140 had been removed) was moved from Council Bluffs to Silvis on August 25, 2022, in a special move by the Iowa Interstate Railroad, arriving at Silvis that evening.

The following comes from The Mixed Train, from Camerail Club of Omaha, Issue 2020-10:

The former Southern Pacific business car "Sunset" is now assigned to the general pool based at the Council Bluffs Coach Shops. This business car was the last completely built business car constructed by Pullman, Lot 6953 Plan 7646; ordered June 1954 and delivered on November 15, 1955. The car was specially designed and built for Donald J Russell, President of the Southern Pacific 1952 to 1964 and Chairman 1964 to 1972. It is reported the car cost around (or over) a million dollars , and that's in 1955 dollar values! It was rumored that the Southern Pacific Board of Directors were somewhat outraged at the cost. To match the Budd built passenger equipment for the railroad's flagship train the "Sunset Limited", the car had stainless steel siding with the car weighting some 188,000 pounds and just under 87 feet long, making it one of the longest (if not the longest) business cars built. The length of the car caused some problems in what tracks it could run over during switching moves.

Because of the longer length, the car had four good sized bedrooms, an observation room, dining room and kitchen with employee's quarters. The master bedrooms were assigned to Mr. Russell ("A") and Mrs. Russell ("B"). Being very devout Catholics, the Russells always traveled with a priest who was assigned bedroom "C"; with bedroom "D" assigned to his male secretary. The car had a cook and waiter assigned to it with their quarters just off the pantry. On inspection trips, Mr. Russell would sit at the "command chair," at the left side end of the car with a desk and would be looking out the back window.

The other three chairs would occupied by senior or regional officials with the sofa by local men. The inspection trips could be very tense times as if in the course of the trip in the inspection of the railroad, with the questions/answers periods and the train operations could (and in many cases were) career ending events for regional and/or local officials. The invitation to ride in the business car on these inspection trips were not exactly the most welcoming news by area officials. On happier times, the car was used by VIPs of both business and politics over its history. President Eisenhower rode in the "Sunset" after the Republican Convention in San Francisco to Monterey in August 1956.

The car was the second to carry the "Sunset" name with the first being a first class heavyweight Pullman built in 1928 which was renamed to the "Stanford" in 1955, which is also now assigned to the Council Bluffs Coach Shops.

General Notes:

  1. Built as Southern Pacific Business Car 150 "Sunset" (2nd); to UP by merger in 1996; to UP Business Car UPP 150 "Sunset" in 1997
  2. The Sunset was built in 1955 and was the last business car made by Pullman-Standard. The present Sunset is the third Southern Pacific car to carry the name and is No. 150. Ordered by Southern Pacific President D. J. Russell for his personal use during the height of the "light weight" era, at 90 feet, the Sunset is the longest, and one of the heaviest business cars built. It was state-of-the-art in car design, all stainless steel construction; lowered, luminous ceilings; and bright lighting throughout highlighting modern furnishings. In keeping with the period, the interior was finished in Formica, rather than wood. This makes the Sunset a valuable asset on operating trips, and other heavy-duty assignments where a wood interior may be damaged. The Sunset has undergone periodic upgrading of its mechanical systems over the years, and is able to operate on Amtrak trains from 480 volt head end power, or its two on-board diesel generators. Recently the interior has been redecorated to include new English wool Axminster carpet and new window treatments. Upholstery throughout the car was redone to complement the new color schemes. The dining room furniture was also replaced. President Dwight Eisenhower accepted the 1956 nomination for his second term from the platform of the Sunset, which was backed into the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California, for the occasion. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower frequently traveled on the car, which was at her disposal. The last rail trip she took was on the Sunset. (from uprr.com)
  3. UPP 150 number applied between late 1996 and July 1997, when the car was seen with its UPP 150 number, and still in unpainted stainless steel. (information from Evan Werkema)
  4. Stainless steel finish until after July 1997; repainted to UP yellow and gray by August 1998. (information from Evan Werkema)

James started his railroad career as a business car chef in 1984 with Union Pacific Railroad in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston. He was transferred to Omaha in 1999 and held the same position throughout his career. James has worked on all of Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet dining cars over the years, though his favorite car to prepare meals on was the Cabarton. (part from uprr.com)
  5. The "Cabarton" name was given to newly remodeled Crew Car 202 in 1980 by UP president John Kenefick in honor of R.L. Richmond, Union Pacific's then vice president of operations. Richmond's father began his railroad career as a Union Pacific carman in Cabarton, Idaho. Cabarton is the name of a siding about 60 miles north of Boise on UP's Idaho Northern Branch. The town was named for C.A. Barton, general manager of the Boise-Payette Lumber Company, which built the Inter-Mountain Railway in the 1914-1915, running 27 miles east and northeast of Boise, serving the lumber and mining areas of Robie, Mores and Grimes creeks.

General Notes:

  1. Built as Baggage Dormitory 6006, with six dormitory rooms (one with upper and lower beds for stewards, two with two-tier bunks, and three with three-tier bunks). Equipped with two four-wheel trucks.
  2. In 1962, UP 6006 was remodeled to Boiler Dormitory 304, including the addition of a Vapor 4740 steam generator and a 5,000 gallon water tank between the steam generator and the dormitory section, and a 500-gallon diesel fuel tank underneath. Due to the extra weight, the truck beneath the steam generator and water tank was changed from a four-wheel truck, to a six-wheel truck. UP 304 also had a small Onan diesel generator and small air compressor next to the boiler, both for the boiler. UP 304 retained its two rest rooms and gained a shower at sometime in its service. To allow for the steam generator, water tank, diesel generator and air compressor, the baggage section was reduced to about half of its original length.
  3. In July 1987, Boiler Dormitory 304 was assigned to steam program and renumbered to UPP 209.
  4. In 1993, the two rear dormitory rooms were converted into a single storage room for merchandise for the Sherman Hill concession car, by knocking out the wall between them.
  5. Also in 1993, one of the rest rooms was removed at the same time and the Onan diesel generator was removed and replaced by the larger John Deere genset that had been removed from the Idaho. The previous Onan genset had been sized for only the steam generator; the John Deere genset had about three times the capacity of the Onan, allowing it to run the boiler, the lights, the heat (or the air conditioning), and all the other features of the car. The Onan had 15 kW and the John Deere has 37 kW.
  6. Also in 1993, the 5,000-gallon water tank for the previous steam generator was removed and was replaced by a 375-gallon water tank. A 375-gallon diesel fuel tank was added, giving the car capacity to power itself and six or seven others. The steam generator was retained and was used on a regular basis to furnish steam to speed up a re-firing of the steam locomotives.
  7. In 1997, an additional Caterpillar diesel generator set was installed. The Caterpillar genset is 200 kW, producing 480 VAC, the industry standard for trainlined HEP.
  8. Also in 1997, the car named as "Howard Fogg" in memory of the renowned artist Howard Fogg who painted hundreds of paintings of Union Pacific subjects. Mr. Fogg said on several occasions that he never tired of completing paintings of Union Pacific's famous Big Boy steam locomotives.
  9. In 2004, additional water and fuel capacity was installed. The car has two washer and dryer sets for crew members. At the same time one of the three remaining dormitory rooms were stripped of their original six bunks, and one was converted to an office, which also contains a bed. The other two were changed to contain only a single bed in each room. The original steward's room, adjacent to the original baggage section, has been converted for use as a crew luggage area.
