During WWII, the 1000-series cars were used as coaches on the Kansas Division. Most often they were seen on trains 69 and 70. Often all three coaches of these trains were the 1000s. And not always with the observation platform trailing. Another use was as coaches on trains 543 and 544 between St. Joseph and Grand Island. These were motor car replacements. Usual power was a 2850 class 4-6-2 (also saw the 2835 on this train). A RPO-baggage trailed the light Pacific and then a 1000 class coach observation trailing, with the observation platform to the rear. (Art Gibson, email dated September 2, 2007)

Some of these cars were used on the Kansas City-Salina Local, trains 39 & 40, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. (Larry Jackman, email dated September 2, 2007)

UP 1400 UP 2035 Apr 1907 Oct 1951 Jun 1958

Description:

  • Length, Over Buffers: 63'-7"
  • Length, Over Coupler Pulling Faces: (not shown)
  • Length, Over End Sills: 60'-2"
  • Length, Inside: 60'-1"
  • Truck Centers: 44'-2"
  • Truck Style: 6 wheel (wheelbase not shown)

General Notes:

  1. Built as UP 1229; renumbered to UP 2035 in June 1915; renumbered to UP 1400 in October 1951; retired in June 1958.
  2. UP 1229 was UP's first Harriman-style steel car. It was built by UP itself to Plan CB-4947, dated February 24, 1906, which was the basis for two experimental full postal cars. SP's Sacramento General Shops began construction of CP 4097 on June 11, 1906. Union Pacific's Omaha shops started work on UP 1229 at about the same time. These cars were similar to the first steel coach (SP 1806), but there were differences. The underframe had the same two 12", 31.5-pound I-beam center sills, cast double body bolsters, and truss rods. However, the floors were not wood. Instead, Monolith was applied over the corrugated steel sub-floor. The arch of the roof was slightly higher, resulting in height over roof sheets of 13' 10 9/16" instead of the 13' 8 3/16" on SP 1806. All subsequent Common Standard cars had 14-foot roof heights. (Jeff Cauthen)
  3. Builder Floor Plan: D-CB-5406 (before car was stripped for postal storage service by removal of the mail fixtures, including pigeon hole letter cases, stanchion racks, etc.)
  4. UP Specification 314
  5. Cars lettered on sides between doors "United States Mail Storage Car".
  6. Two 4'-10" doors on each side.
  7. UP 1400-1459 are shown in ORPTE data as Postal Storage cars, 1952-1960
