Union Pacific Diesel Roster

Updates and Corrections

(Return to Union Pacific Diesel Index Page)

The Union Pacific diesel roster presented here is only current through mid 2009.

This on-line roster is the last remnant of my previous works dealing with Union Pacific diesel locomotives, which started with publication in magazines in 1979.

(View listings of my previous works, 1979-2007)

For a roster that is updated regularly and kept current, see R. Craig's UP listing.

UP E8 and E9 Locomotives -- A recent online question made me realize that my information about UP's E8s and E9s was a bit scattered, so I added a new page about Union Pacific's E8 and E9 locomotives, consolidating the information previously found on three separate pages.

One of the spotting features that make an E8 compared to an E9 is that the E8s has both a headlight in the door, and a signal light in the upper headlight location on the locomotive's nose. All of the 18 E8s (UP 925-942), and only the eight E9s in the UP 900-907 group delivered in 1956 had dual headlights. All E9s delivered in 1954 and 1955 had single headlights and no signal light, as did the seven E9s (UP 908-912) delivered in 1961-1963.

UP E9 912 -- Updated the note for UP E9A no. 912, to show it being moved in early June 2017 from the Danbury Railway Museum, Danbury, Connecticut, to Waycross, Georgia. The locomotive has been owned by Ed Bowers of Vintage Locomotives, Inc. (VLIX), since the mid 1990s.

December 26, 2016

Fixed the year on EMD order 72625, built in February and March 1973 as SSW SD45T-2 9261-9301 (41 units). Previously some were shown as 1972 instead of the correct 1973. Some were rebuilt to SD40-2T and renumbered in the UP 4794-4831 series. Others remained as SD45T-2 and were renumbered into the UP 4832-4928 series, and the UP 4929-4999 series. (Thanks to Ken Ardinger for pointing out the error, in an email dated December 26, 2016)

June 5, 2016

Sulzer SD45 60 -- Fixed the later number (UP 4761 instead of 4764) and date (13 Sep1999 instead of 23 Sep 1999) for UP Sulzer SD45 no. 60. This information now matches later information that came to light in 2003, but was missed in this particular roster listing. (See also: UP SD40-2 4733-4765) (Thanks to Scott Thomas for pointing out the error, in an email dated June 5, 2016)

April 16, 2016

UP GTEL 28 -- Corrected a long-standing error concerning UP 8500 GTEL no. 28. A photo has surfaced showing UP 28 on April 5, 1971, at GE at Erie, meaning that it was traded to GE on March 9, 1971.

December 22, 2015

UP GP9 296 -- Updated the roster listing for UP GP9 296 to show it being moved from Boulder Valley Railroad Historical Society at Boulder, Colorado, to Heber Valley Railroad at Heber, Utah, on December 18-21, 2015.

October 26, 2015

Added a better date (May 1989) that the toilet modification was removed from SD40-2 3794, which was renumbered to UP 3257 (2nd) in May 2004.

UP 3794 was fitted with rear toilet enclosure in February 1982; the modification was unpopular with the crews and to save maintenance costs, the enclosure's access door was welded shut by mid 1985; enclosure was removed in May 1989. (Previously reported as being removed in "late 1990.")

February 2, 2015

Zack Hilton and Tim Vana have provided photos of several ex P&LE MP15DC locomotives, with their new UP 1275-1284 series numbers but still in full P&LE black.

John Benson recently discovered a slide dated January 29, 1980 showing UP SW10 1866. UP records show January 25, 1980 as the completion date for when UP SW7 1866 was rebuilt to an SW10. This newly discovered slide means that SW10 1866 was renumbered to UP 1202 very soon after, but likely before entering service. The fourth SW10, UP 1203, was completed on March 9, 1980.

Based on a photo shared by Ken Larson, a note has been added to the roster listing for UP 1989 (D&RGW heritage unit), showing that its builder decal does not match other available documentation concerning the order number and builder number for the unit.

Corrected a mixup of GP30 numbers retired in 1985; UP 860 was scrapped, and UP 872 was sold to Nucor Steel at Plymouth, Utah, instead of the reverse. Thanks goes to Warren Johnson for pointing out the mistake. He was wondering about a photo he has of UP 860 being cut up at Durbano, including what looked like the cab being separated. The cab of UP 860 is part of the Operation Lifesaver display at Ogden Union Station museum.

December 8, 2011

Removed the separate page for WP temporary numbers. During 2001-2003, Union Pacific began using a series of temporary WP road numbers, after the WP reporting mark was reinstated for use on locomotives. This new reporting mark was needed to allow road numbers of retired locomotives that were still on UP property, to be used on renumbered locomotives. As far as I know, they were all clerical actions. Some may have been physically renumbered for a brief move in interchange, but none of them were ever in service as their WP numbers.

April 11, 2011

Updated the disposition information for UP H20-44s 1366 and 1369 to show that the numbering sequence from SWPC 66 and 69 may be reversed as SWPC 408 and 409, or SWPC 409 and 408.

September 8, 2009

Changes for March, April and May 2009 have been incorporated.

After completing the UP roster changes for March, April and May 2009, I realized that I no longer have the information sources or dedicated time to keep the effort going. Due to its continued and growing complexity of Union Pacific's current diesel locomotive fleet, June 1, 2009 will serve as the cut off date and the updates for May 2009 will be the last.

I will continue to document the history of UP's locomotive fleet, but the time and effort will now be focused on the road's motive power prior to 1982, including steam locomotives back to 1864. Maintaining a "current" UP diesel roster first started in 1988 and has been a real challenge. I did my first UP roster in 1972, and another in 1978, which was published in Extra 2200 South. I did another for George Cockle's UP 1990 book, and for my own UP 1992 book. The UP Locomotive Directories of 1998, 1999, and 2000 continued the effort, after which my UP roster went to its online version. It's been a good run, but it's over.

June 30, 2009

Changed quantities of U50Cs scrapped by Erman Corporation in May and August 1977, based on information in UP's own Historical Record documentation. (thanks to Dick Harley for pointing out the error)

This corrects the information presented in "Diesels of the Union Pacific, The Classic Era, Volume II", page 137.

May 6, 2009

Rearranged the roster listings for the 60 ex MP GE C36-7s, putting all four number groups all on the same page, with links from each of the earlier pages: UP 9000-9059; UP 2600-2659; UP 600-659; and UP 7942-7999. The new page includes some information about these units' new home in Estonia.

April 30, 2009

Rearranged the roster pages for the 300 series GP9s and GP9Bs, along with the Turbocharged GP9 article. Added new page with a list of the units that were turbocharged, what type turbocharger, and the installation date.

April 19, 2009

Fixed the "Individual unit histories" general note for the 471 series ex SP GP38-2s. It had not been updated to reflect UP not following numerical sequence when the units were renumbered from the 1971 series to the 471 series. (Thanks goes to Brian Reid for pointing out the confusion.)

April 4, 2009

Added listing for 125 new GE's in the UP 7345-7469 group, being delivered to UP beginning in January 2009.

With Norm Metcalf's help, I fixed a couple frame numbers in the UP 2527-2588 series (GP38-2/-3), along with putting links back and forth between the original UP 850-887 series of GP40s and the current UP 1027-1088 series.

March 30, 2009

Changes for December 2008, January 2009 and February 2009 have been incorporated.

February 19, 2009

Corrected an old error for the builder numbers for ex SP GP60s 9600-9619, as both UP 1900 series and as UP 5700 series, corrected from 886185-1 to 20 to 866185-1 to 20. Thanks to Larry Russell for pointing out this very old typographical error, which dates from my very earliest SP roster information, way back to the 1998 UP Locomotive Directory.

December 6, 2008

Changes for October and November 2008 have been incorporated, including renumbering of UP 2140 to UP 238, UP 890 to GMTX 2162, and SP GP60 9742 to UP 1960 (2nd).

October 13, 2008

September 28, 2008

Added missing renumber dates for the groups of ex C&NW SD40-2s, UP 3015-3098.

September 5, 2008

Changes for August 2008 have been incorporated, including the out-of-sequence renumbering of the UP 7336-7405 series back to the UP 7010-7079 series, but not to their original numbers.

August 3, 2008

Changes for July 2008 have been incorporated, including renumbering of GP40 UP 9955 (ex UP 672/MKT 237) to UP 1337.

July 7, 2008

Changes for June 2008 have been incorporated, including the retirement of three entire groups of locomotives: UP 2826-2865, SD40-2Ts rebuilt from ex SP SD45T-2s, and UP 8911-8931, SD90ACs, along with all of the remaining ex MP GP50s in the UP 960-989 series, and the UP 1658-1687 series.

Changes for June 2008 include the out-of-sequence renumbering of GP40-2 (GP40R) SSW 7962 to UP 1335 instead of its assigned UP 1442.

Changes for June 2008 include the new UPY 3200 series units of SD40-2Rs reassigned from road service to yard service.

July 5, 2008

Reinstated UP 2826-2865 back to the current roster listing; removed in error due to reported retirement in May 2003; further research has found that all 40 units are still in service, with their UP numbers, but leased as of July 2003 from First Union Rail (FURX) as part of the peak power program, still in service as of mid June 2008. (thanks to Lance Gleich for pointing out the problem, after seeing UP 2850 in service.)

June 24, 2008

Changes for May 2008 have been incorporated, including out-of-sequence renumbering of UP 1366 to UPY 1296; out-of-sequence UP 2697 from UP 8626; and new UP 6888-6968 series for units converted to 4400-horsepower C44/60AC units from 7500 Series 6000-horsepower C60AC units.

May 5, 2008

Changes for April 2008 have been incorporated, including the out-of-sequence renumbering of UP 7894 to UP 2740, and UP 7914 to UP 2693. The 7875-7916 group is now either fully renumbered or retired, clearing the numbers for use by new GE C45AC-CTE units.

April 5, 2008

Updated the notes for all four number series of UP's GP40X units: UP 9000-9005, renumbered to UP 90-95; renumbered to UP 954-959; renumbered to UP 5500-5505; retired in May and June 2001.

April 3, 2008

Changes for March 2008 have been incorporated, including the renumbering of UP 846 to UP 281 for unknown reasons, the out-of-sequence renumberings for UP 2658 (2nd) and UP 2660, and the renumberings of four SD40-2s (UP 3635, 3728, 7891, and 7916) to the temporary WP series for future use as core units in the RP20SD six-axle Genset program.

March 1, 2008

Changes for February 2008 have been incorporated, including the out-of-sequence renumbering of UP 8624 to UP 2653.

February 22, 2008

Added data for SP 6855, an SD45T-2 retired and sold to LLPX for the 20-cylinder to 16-cylinder rebuild and lease-back program for the UP 4794-4831 group. SP 6855 was assigned UP 4819 but was found to be unusable in the rebuild program (the UP 4819 number was used by SP 6824), and was scrapped for LLPX at Paducah, Kentucky, by VMV Enterprises.

Also updated and clarified several bits of information in the same group.

February 18, 2008

Corrected the builder numbers for UP 9556-9559, four GE Dash 8-40CW units (which UP calls C41-8W), delivered to UP in December 1993. (information from Richard Adams via email)

February 16, 2008

Fixed the missing entry for UP 283, an ex SP GP38-2 that was reported as being retired in late 2003, but was renumbered instead in April 2004 to UP 283.

January 21, 2008

Changes for December 2007 have been incorporated.

Updated the missing renumber date for UP SD40T-2 2893, retired on 21 December 2007. This locomotive was built as D&RGW 5364, renumbered to UP 4051 on 22 September 1999, repainted and renumbered to UP 8621 on 28 March 2000, renumbered to UP 2893 on 28 December 2001.

January 15, 2008

December 21, 2007

Updated the dispositions for UP GP35s 744 and 763, and ex WP GP35s UP 793 and 799. The ex WP units were wrecked and repaired by UP at Salt Lake City, including using the long hoods from the retired UP units. Also added the ex WP GP35s to the early-merger index page. (Big oops that they were missing all this time.)

December 6, 2007

Updated the pages for the ex MP B23-7s and ex MP B30-7s, and the ex SP B23-7s and ex SP B30-7s to include their full retirement status, and their rebuilding (or conversion) to UPY 100-series CCRCLs, UPY 2300-series Green Goats, or UPY 2600-series Genset units.

November 18, 2007

Changes for October 2007 have been incorporated, including delivery dates for September 2007, and builder plate checks from Scott Thomas and Keel Middleton.

Added information about SP 8628 and 8694, involved in a wreck at Bertram, California, on November 10, 2007.

Changed ownership data for three former SP SD40M-2 units. UP 2767, 2770, 2772 had previously been shown as former N&W units, which was incorrect. The units were EMD SD45Ms (with carbodies similar to EMD's SDP45) and were built for Erie Lackawana. When EL became part of Conrail in 1976, they became CR units. Upon expiration of their lease in 1984, CR returned them to their owner, who then sold them to VMV Enterprises for national lease service, and later for conversion to SD40M-2 units for SP. (information from Chris Toth)

Did some cleanup of the files for the 48 former C&NW GP50s: first as UP 900-947, then as UP 5510-5557, then as UP 1610-1657. The lease for all 48 units expired and they were retired in September and November 2002, and returned to their owner.

April 8, 2007

Changes for February and March 2007 have been incorporated, along with several builder plate checks from Norm Metcalf and Ken Larson.

March 22, 2007

Fixed typographical error on builder number for the VO-1000 that was in service first as UP 1060, then as UP 1200. My sources show that the number was 69672, but I typed 69772 in my original 1978 roster manuscript that was the basis for the five-part UP roster in Extra 2200 South in 1980-1981. I continued my error on page 36 in Volume 2 of my UP 1934-1983 book. A recent email from Richard Adams pointed out the mistake, adding that his research in the Baldwin records in Harrisburg confirmed the corrected builder number.

February 11, 2007

Fixed several renumbering errors that have come to my attention via private emails.

Changes for January 2007 have been incorporated, including a new number series (UP 9863, 9875) for renumbered ex D&RGW SD40T-2 locomotives renumbered to clear that number series for use by new SD70ACe units being delivered during 2007.

June 6, 2006

Rearranged the main index page to put the Current Roster Index, and the current UPY Index at the top.

May 31, 2006

Changed the Modern Era Index page to create a new Current Roster Index page, by taking out the groups that have been either fully renumbered since 2000, or fully retired since 2000.

May 16, 2006

Changes for April 2006 have been incorporated.

Rearranged the UP 9986-9995 groups. SP GP40 3086 (ex D&RGW 3086) was moved from its planned number of 9986, to its apparent new place at UP 9995. I also did some cleanup in the UP 1461-1469 series of ex WP GP40-2s to reflect only one unit (UP 1461) being in that series.

August 24, 2005

As the first part of what will likely be stretched out for a nicely comfortable period of time, I have updated the renumber dates for the ex SP C44ACs. Included are all of the scrambled renumberings for this large group of units, from 2001 through May 2005. Using a process that will allow me to return to it as time and desire allow (without losing my place), other dates will be added later. Check out the ex C&NW and ex MP GP15-1s.

August 13, 2005

Work began in mid July to update my on-line rosters of Union Pacific's diesel fleet since 2001, based entirely on messages posted to various internet news groups. Thanks goes to those guys who take the time to share this data.

Work started by converting each monthly report into a delimited text file, then pulling each file into an Excel spreadsheet. Data was then sorted as to renumber dates, old number, new numbers, and retirement dates.

As to the new stuff, the data was compiled into similar spreadsheets, then sorted. Builder data was added and all data has been integrated into my modern era index, with two new pages called "New GEs" and "New EMDs". These are best accessed from the Modern Era Index page, using the new units' road number.

I have arranged the data with delivery dates, along with separate column for build date, which comes solely from actual sightings, or at least reported sightings.

August 5, 2005

Added new roster pages, and updated other pages, to include UP's newest EMD SD70M and SD70ACe locomotives.

August 4, 2005

Added roster entries, with delivery dates and builder data when known, for all the new GE locomotives delivered since 2001, numbered as UP 5354-6081. I will try to keep these updated as they are delivered.

July 14, 2005

Updated the builder's dates and delivery dates for new units delivered after about 1999, to reflect known delivery dates and builder's dates as they are checked on the actual locomotive. This is a precursor to an update of all changes to UP's diesel fleet from January 2001 through mid 2005.

February 22, 2005

Fixed the builder data for UP 2810 and 2813 (along with UP 4760 and 4763), which was previous presented in reverse order, based on information furnished to UP by NRE. Doug Cummings shared corrected data from actual sightings of the units. Doug also advised me about a typographical error for UP 2784/4734. This was corrected also. Thanks Doug.

January 17, 2005

Added new information that MKT GP38 324 was briefly lettered as MKT 7813 during parts of February and March 1986. (information from Norm Metcalf)

January 16, 2005

Fixed the road number sequence of UP's Alco C-630 units from UP to DM&IR to Cartier Railway (QCM), based on a frame check by Ed Bowers on QCM 34, which he purchased in July 2004. The sequence of the road numbers may also have been shown in error.

January 2, 2005

Fixed a mix-up in the builder number and frame numbers on former SSW GP40-2s 7257 and 7266, to be renumbered to UP 1327 and 1335. The two units were out of sequence due to a deletion error on my part, for two units that didn't make it to UP at merger. There was also an omission in the Modern Era Index page that was missing this 1310-1341 group entirely. (Thanks to Norm Metcalf for pointing out the error, and to Dick Will for furnishing the original 1984 builder's data.)

December 30, 2004

Updated the information for UP C-630 2901, recently sold to Vintage Locomotives, Inc. (Ed Bowers) and moved from Cartier Railway to Arkansas Railroad Museum.

April 7, 2004

Converted all of the 110 files in the on-line UP diesel roster to the new format that is based on the use of PHP. Fixed several typographical errors.

March 21, 2004

Fixed the omitted UP 2060, renumbered from MP 2060 in March 1986. This was one of three MP units in the MP 2054-2063 group that were numbered to UP: MP 2060, to UP 2060, and MP 2058 and 2059, renumbered to UP 2384 and 2385. (Thanks to Randy Keller for pointing out the error.)

January 25, 2004

Added delivery dates to UP C60ACs 7500-7509, along with adding the same data on their previous numbers, UP 7000-7009.

January 6, 2004

Fixed the order number for UP SD40-2 2816/4766, changing it from 7867-38 to 7887-38. (Thanks to Ken Ardinger for his calling this to my attention.)

January 2, 2004

Updated some SD70M builder dates, based on plate checks from Norm Metcalf.

Edited the road numbers for ex SP 100-378, and added links between the first-assigned UP numbers and their December 1999-assigned UP numbers.

December 26, 2003

Fixed the builder dates for ex MP GP15-1s 1629-1643, including the current UPY 629-643, changing the date from September 1979 to October 1979. (Plate check information from Norm Metcalf.)

November 22, 2003

Fixed the links in the Early Merger Index for the ex MP GP38-2s and ex MKT GP38-2s and GP39-2s in the 2300 series. They incorrectly pointed to the 2500 series GP38-3s. (Thanks to Daryll Faust for pointing out the error.)

November 8, 2003

Fixed the road number in Note 13 for the 2400/2500 series C30-7s. The note called out 2535, but should say 2536. (Thanks to Daryll Faust for pointing out the error.)

September 10, 2003

Fixed the renumber dates for SD45s 1-50. In the initial setup of the roster pages back in 1998 I simply did a cut and paste to move the renumber dates from the 3600-3649 group to the 1-50 group, without considering that UP 3600 (at the top) became UP 50 (at the bottom). All the renumber dates for 1-50 are now correct. The dates on pages 59-60 in the Volume I book are also wrong. (Thanks to Russ Strodtz for his help in pointing out the error.)

September 2, 2003

Fixed SD40s 3060 and 3065, which were originally shown as having the same disposition: HLCX 3065.

July 12, 2003

Updated the disposition information for UP GP20 471.

May 9, 2003

Updated the disposition data for UP NW2 1000 to include its current location at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City, Nevada.

May 1, 2003

Corrected the builder date for UP ABBA F7 1481 set, based on a plate check from Ken Ardinger.

April 22, 2003

Heritage of UP GP38-3s 2412 and 2508 -- Two of UP's current fleet of 2000 horsepower, 4-axle locomotives share a role in a wonderful tale of one locomotive's history being confused with another locomotive's history. The two units are UP 912 (ex UP 2412) and UP 1008 (ex UP 2508).

In 1996 and 1997, UP accepted delivery of 45 GP38-3 locomotives, rebuilt by Boise Locomotive Co. at their shop in Boise, Idaho. The 18 GP38-3s in the UP 2400-2417 number series were rebuilt from former GP38 units, and the 27 GP38-3s in the UP 2500-2526 number series were rebuilt from former GP40s.

The core components (frames, cab, and nose) of GP38 and GP40 locomotives are literally identical, except for minor details that are apparent only to the most studied locomotive historian. As it was manufactured at General Motors' Electro-Motive Division, each locomotive received a number that is stamped on its frame. During the rebuild process, which took place during 1996 and 1997, the frame number of each GP38 or GP40 core locomotive was recorded by Boise Locomotive employees as it entered the rebuild program, and the core components were assigned a new UP number.

Upon completion, all 45 GP38-3 locomotives entered normal service across UP's system. At that time, the known histories of each of the 45 locomotives was published to the railfan community based on information furnished to UP by both Boise Locomotive, and by the owner, helm Financial, from whom UP was leasing the locomotives.

In UP's 1999 renumbering plan, UP 2412 was assigned UP 912 (it was renumbered on May 29, 2003), and UP 2508 was assigned UP 1008 (renumbered on April 10, 2002).

For UP 2412, although it is equipped with a modified GP38 carbody, a check of its barely legible, stamped frame number and draft gear number in November 1998 revealed that its core frame (number 7075-4) came from former CSX GP40 6809 (ex L&N 3013) rather than former CSX GP38 2027 (ex B&O 3827), as previously reported and published.

Much to the chagrin of everyone interested, a frame check of UP 1008 (ex UP 2508) on April 15, 2003 while the unit was at UP's Proviso Yard in Chicago, showed that it, too had frame number 7075-4, thus leaving two units with the same history. Research continued and historians realized that there was an unaccounted for unit in the histories of the original B&O locomotives. As research progressed throughout the period of 1997 to 2003, locomotive historians were able to develop credible histories for both units. One significant feature in determining a locomotive's history is the unit's frame number, which on EMD locomotives is stamped in two locations. Observations showed that both units had the same frame number, but that UP 2412's original number had been ground off and restamped with an incorrect frame number.

(Based on a discussion in the online LocoNotes group, from March 14 to April 22, 2003)

March 23, 2003

Fixed errors with the histories of UP 4115-4163, former MP SD40-2s delivered as Texas & Pacific, Missouri Pacific, and Chicago & Eastern Illinois units. (Thanks to Randy Keller and Norm Metcalf for pointing out the errors, and for providing the data to correct them.)

March 15, 2003

Updated the unit histories for UP 2811, 2812, and 2814, which were changed based on reports by Wolfgang Luth in LocoNotes, March 13 and March 15, 2003. The original question came from Bill Miller based on his photo of UP 2811 showing that it was a former SD45. The similar histories for UP 4761, 4762, and 4764 were also changed.

February 22, 2003

Updated the information for MP GP38s 2002, 2005, and 2007. (Information from Joe Atkinson.)

February 21, 2003

Added the disposition of UP SD40-2 3308, rebuilt to a road slug for Belt Railway of Chicago.

December 10, 2002

Fixed the retirements error in the 1931 chronology; the retirements for both 1930 and 1931 were initially shown as being identical because of a cut-and-paste error in the initial layout, when in fact there were 15 retirements in 1931. The quantities in all preceding years back to 1915 were also corrected, since the quantities are derived by counting the retirements backwards from today's two existing steam locomotives. (Thanks to Mike Oglesby for pointing out the error.)

November 18, 2002

Added information about UP SW1500 1009, wrecked on UP in July 2001 and replaced in Helm lease fleet by UP 1112. Also updated the UP wrecked units page to include the UP 1009 wreck. (Information from "RustedFlange" and David Curlee.)

November 16, 2002

Updated the information for UP 498, renumbered from SP 4873. (corrected information from Ken Ardinger)

October 27, 2002

Added Econo-Rail (ECRX) data information for TR5A 1870, TR5B 1872B, and the U25Bs. (Information from Randy Keller.)

September 20, 2002

Fixed the builder's dates on GP38-2s 1971-1999, renumbered to 471-499, ex SP 4845-4871.

August 16, 2002

Updated the WP GP9s 725 and 731 to reflect the fact that they are at Portola. I hadn't taken the time to update much of the former WP stuff since I sent that roster to John Ryczkowski in 1993. He used it in the Feather River Rail Society's Western Pacific Headlight, Issue 9.

August 8, 2002

Fixed the date (Feb 1978 instead of Feb 1979) that ditch lights were installed on nine SD40-2s (UP 3396-3399 and UP 3410-3414).

August 4, 2002

Updated the disposition information for SW7 1819.

July 7, 2002

Changed model designations of SD45-2T to the more common SD45T-2.

Changed model designations of SD40-2T to the more common SD40T-2, except on the 40 ex SP SD45T-2s that were rebuilt with 3000 horsepower engines (UP 2826-2865, renumbered from UP 4794-4831)

June 21, 2002

Added information about the SD40X model designation.

June 19, 2002

Added UP's Roadway units and tie plant units to the miscellaneous units index and accompanying roster page.

June 17, 2002

Fixed several broken links.

Edited all three groups of ex MKT GP38ACs to bring them in line with each other.

May 29, 2002

This Union Pacific Diesel Locomotive Roster was first published to the World Wide Web, being the result of 30 years of research and preliminary publishing to paper. As reflected in the updates above, publishing this roster data to the internet allows mistakes to be corrected, and new information to be added.

Thanks to everyone for their input over the years, including the readers and subscribers of Extra 2200 South, Pacific (Rail) News, CTC Board, The Mixed Train, and numerous other newsletters and private individuals. Thanks also goes to the subscribers and contributors of the on-line LocoNotes email discussion group at Yahoo Groups.

The first versions of this data existed as WordPerfect files, then as MS Word files. This was the source for the information published in the 1990 book, the 1992 book, and all three Locomotive Directories. The work to convert the MS Word files from Word 97 to HTML for web pages began in early February 2002.
